Former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello Requests Trial in Home State
June 27, 2024Yahaya Bello, the former Governor of Kogi State, has requested that his trial be transferred from Abuja to his home state of Kogi. Bello, who is facing a 19-count charge, believes that since the alleged offence occurred during his tenure as governor of the state, it is appropriate for the legal proceedings to be conducted there.
Bello‘s request comes amid ongoing legal battles with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which has accused him of converting a total of N80,246,470,089.88 belonging to the Kogi State government to personal use in February 2016. The EFCC has been relentless in its pursuit of the former governor, even withdrawing its appeal against a contempt charge instituted against its chairman by Bello.
The decision to request a transfer of the trial to Kogi State has raised eyebrows, with many questioning the motives behind the move. Some speculate that Bello may be seeking a more favourable environment for his defence, while others believe he may be trying to rally support from his home state.
As the legal drama unfolds, the people of Kogi State remain divided over the fate of their former governor. Supporters argue that he should be given a fair trial in his home state, while critics maintain that justice should be served regardless of location.
