Alexander James Williams, famously known as Ali Williams, is a retired New Zealand professional rugby union player who played as a lock, most notably for the Super Rugby club Blues and the New Zealand national team. Williams had a successful professional career spanning over a decade.

Ali Williams was born on April 30, 1981, in Auckland, New Zealand. His parents, Rodney and Helen Williams, and his brother Jay Williams raised him.

Career

Ali Williams enjoyed an extensive career in rugby union, playing 77 test matches for the New Zealand national team, the All Blacks.

He was featured in three Rugby World Cups – 2003, 2007, and 2011 – and helped the All Blacks achieve World Cup victory in 2011. 

Williams was recognized as one of the New Zealand Rugby Almanack’s five players of the year in 2005. He primarily played for the Blues provincial team but also had a stint with the Crusaders.

With the Blues, he won the Super 12 title in 2003. Williams mainly played for Auckland at the club level, briefly representing Tasman.

Williams also had a loan spell with Nottingham in England’s second-tier competition during his career. From 2013 to 2015, he briefly played in France with Toulon. Williams then made a short comeback in 2016/17 with the French club Racing 92.
