Man City Fined for Late Kick-offs, But What About the 115 Charges?

July 31, 2024 0 Posted By Kaptain Kush

The Premier League has fined Manchester City £2.09 million for 22 breaches related to kick-off delays over the past two seasons. However, this fine is minimal compared to the 115 charges the club faces for alleged breaches of the league’s financial rules.

These charges, announced in February 2023, cover a nine-year period from 2009 to 2018. The club is accused of providing inaccurate financial information, failing to disclose full details of payments to managers and players, and not complying with UEFA’s Financial Fair Play regulations. A hearing is set for this case, with a potential verdict expected in the summer of 2025.

If found guilty, City could face hefty fines and points deductions, as well as relegation and expulsion from the Premier League. The club has denied all charges and welcomes the opportunity to clear its name before an independent panel.

The recent fine for late kick-offs is unlikely to affect the 115-charge case. The Associated Party Transaction (APT) rules, which the club is accused of breaching, only came into force in 2021, after the period in question for the financial breaches.

The 115-charge case is highly complex and unprecedented, requiring extensive preparation from both sides. The football world keenly anticipates the outcome as it could set a precedent for handling financial breaches in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Manchester City concluded the 2023/24 season with their fourth consecutive Premier League title but fell short of another Treble, losing in the FA Cup final and the Champions League quarter-finals. The club hopes to move past the charges and focus on the upcoming season.
