Buju Banton Criticizes Afrobeats for Lacking Depth and Social Impact

Jamaican reggae legend Buju Banton has voiced his concerns about the popular Afrobeats genre, arguing that it lacks depth and fails to tackle important social issues. Known for his thought-provoking lyrics and commitment to messages of empowerment, Banton expressed disappointment that the current wave of Afrobeats music doesn’t strive to “liberate Africa” or make a meaningful impact on the continent’s socio-political landscape.

“The music needs to have substance, to uplift, educate, inform, and inspire change,” Banton stated in a recent interview. “When I look at today’s Afrobeats, I see a lot of style and glamour, but where is the substance? Where is the message?“

Banton‘s remarks come at a time when Afrobeats is enjoying massive global success, with artists from Nigeria, Ghana, and other African countries achieving international acclaim. Despite this, Banton believes that the genre’s growing popularity shouldn’t overshadow its original purpose.

“Afrobeat was created to speak truth to power, challenge the status quo, and bring about change,” Banton said, referencing the legendary Nigerian musician and activist Fela Kuti. “But now, it seems the focus has shifted from substance to style, from message to glamour.”

He also criticized current Afrobeats artists for not connecting enough with their African roots or addressing the critical issues facing the continent. “They don’t aim to free Africa or make a meaningful impact,” Banton lamented. “Their focus is more on global recognition and commercial success.”
