Early Life and Education

Renn McDonnell Hawkey was born on March 29, 1974, in New York City, United States. He is the third of five children born to Penelope “Penny” (née Sharp), an advertising executive famous for writing the Coca-Cola commercial “Hey Kid, Catch!”, and William Stevenson “Bill” Hawkey, who also worked in advertising. Hawkey’s parents now own and operate Sundial Farm, a plant nursery in Ossining.

Hawkey has four siblings: Adam Hawkey, a film compositor and colorist; Robin Hawkey, a chiropractor; Timothy Hawkey, a marketing managing director; and Molly Hawkey, an actress and comedian.

He attended the Hyde School in Maine, where he met future bandmate Elijah Blue Allman, and later studied at Sarah Lawrence College. His ethnicity is white, and he practices Christianity.

Career

Hawkey started his career as the third member to join the band Deadsy, after being sent a synthesizer and demo tape by frontman Elijah Blue Allman. Deadsy released their self-titled debut album in 1996 on Sire Records. In 1999, the band gained attention from labels and notable musicians after their first gig at The Viper Room.

Deadsy’s second album, Commencement, was released in 2002 on Jonathan Davis’ Elementree Records, a division of DreamWorks. Hawkey also worked with Thirty Seconds to Mars on their debut album that year. In 2002, Deadsy left DreamWorks after it was sold to Interscope Records.

In 2006, Deadsy joined Korn and Deftones on the Family Values Tour. The band reformed in 2018 and played a show at San Quentin State Prison alongside Queens of the Stone Age. Their fourth album Subterfugue was never released, and Hawkey announced his departure from the band in 2023.

Before transitioning into film production, Hawkey had a cameo role as a musician in the 2003 film The Singing Detective. As a producer, he worked on the 2011 drama Higher Ground, directed by his wife Vera Farmiga, and served as an executive producer on the 2017 documentary Unspoken. He also had a supporting role in the 2015 TV series The Returned.
