Bryan Jay Singer directed a short film called “Lion’s Den” in 1988. The film involved actor Ethan Hawke and editor John Ottman, whom he knew from his childhood in New Jersey.
After a “Lion’s Den screening,” Singer was approached by a Japanese company interested in funding low-budget films. He pitched a concept that became the 1993 film “Public Access.”
Ottman served as editor and composer for this film, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. In 1994, Singer founded the production company Bad Hat Harry Productions, named in honor of Steven Spielberg.
His next major directorial project was “The Usual Suspects” in 1995, which was screened at the Cannes Film Festival and became a critical and commercial success, winning awards for screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie and actor Kevin Spacey.
In 1998, Singer obtained the rights to adapt Stephen King’s novella “Apt Pupil,” a thriller about a boy discovering his neighbor is a Nazi war criminal. The film adaptation starred Ian McKellen, Brad Renfro, and David Schwimmer.
