Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Nigeria’s First Lady, has publicly defended President Bola Tinubu against claims that his policies are responsible for the current economic challenges faced by Nigerians. Speaking at an event in Ife, where she inaugurated a hostel and road named after her at Obafemi Awolowo University, Senator Tinubu pointed out that the administration is still in its early stages.

18 months into our administration, we are not the cause of the current economic situation; we are trying to fix it and secure the future,” she said, urging Nigerians to remain patient. Her comments come amidst economic difficulties linked to the removal of fuel subsidies, a decision made shortly after President Tinubu‘s inauguration, which saw fuel prices rise from N198 to N1,030 per litre.

The First Lady expressed optimism about the future, stating, “With the help of God, we are getting to the promised land in no distant time,” suggesting hope for economic recovery and stability under the current administration.

Her remarks followed several economic reforms by the Tinubu administration, including removing fuel subsidies to promote fiscal responsibility. While the policy has drawn criticism for its immediate impact on the cost of living, the government has emphasized its long-term benefits.

At the same event, Senator Tinubu, who has served as a senator representing Lagos Central, also announced a N1 billion donation to the university for its development. This donation was highlighted as part of the administration’s commitment to education and development, even in challenging economic times.

The event was attended by several traditional rulers, including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, who commended Senator Tinubu for her role as a model for the youth and her initiatives during her tenure as First Lady of Lagos State.
