Bobrisky Rearrested by EFCC at Lagos Airport Amidst Ongoing Investigation
November 1, 2024Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, was once again taken into custody by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos on the evening of October 31, 2024. This rearrest comes shortly after Bobrisky‘s release on bail from a previous detention by Nigerian authorities.
Bobrisky, a controversial figure known for his crossdressing and social media influence, was attempting to board a flight to London when the arrest occurred. Eyewitnesses reported that the plane was halted just before takeoff, and Bobrisky was escorted off amidst considerable attention.
The socialite, visibly distressed, took to Instagram to announce his arrest, pleading for help from his followers: “Nigerians help me, EFCC just arrested me. I’m badly injured,” he posted, along with videos purportedly showing the moments of his arrest.
This latest incident follows a turbulent period for Bobrisky. He was previously detained by the Nigeria Immigration Service at the Seme border, accused of attempting to flee the country amid investigations into allegations of bribery and financial misconduct. The EFCC’s rearrest, which occurred only days after his release on bail, has reignited public and media interest in his legal woes.
The EFCC’s interest in Bobrisky stems from an ongoing investigation that includes allegations of money laundering and other financial crimes. Earlier, an audio recording surfaced in which Bobrisky allegedly claimed he could serve his six-month jail term outside of Kirikiri prison due to influential connections, a claim he later dismissed as fabricated.
Isaac Fayose, a notable figure on the same flight, confirmed the incident on social media, expressing concern over the timing and circumstances of Bobrisky‘s arrest. This event has further fueled discussions on social media platforms, with many questioning Nigerian authorities’ handling of the case.
Legal experts have pointed out that such high-profile arrests, especially at international airports, could be indicative of either new evidence coming to light or pressure from higher authorities to curb the perceived influence of figures like Bobrisky in Nigerian society.
Bobrisky‘s legal team has yet to release an official statement regarding the rearrest, but sources close to the matter suggest that they are preparing to challenge the legality of the arrest and the ongoing investigation against their client.
