While details about Čech’s formal academic education beyond high school are limited, it is known that he pursued a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) at Longford International College. His ethnicity is Czech, though his religious affiliation is unknown.

Career

Petr Čech started playing football at the age of 7 for Škoda Plzeň (later Viktoria Plzeň) in the Czech Republic. He initially played as a striker but switched to goalkeeper after breaking his leg at age 10.

Čech debuted in 1999 at 17 for the Czech First League team Chmel Blšany. In 2001, at age 19, he joined Sparta Prague and set a league record by not conceding a goal for 903 competitive minutes.

In 2002, Čech moved abroad to join French club Rennes for €5.5 million. After one season in France, Chelsea signed him in 2004 for £7 million, making him their most expensive goalkeeper.

Čech went on to have a highly successful career at Chelsea, helping them win multiple Premier League titles and other trophies. In 2006, he suffered a serious head injury in a collision during a match but made a full recovery and continued playing with a protective head guard.

After 11 seasons at Chelsea, Čech moved to their London rivals Arsenal in 2015 on a 4-year contract for around £10 million. This transfer was met with controversy and death threats from a minority of Chelsea fans.

Čech signed a four-year contract with Arsenal, Chelsea’s Premier League rivals, on June 29, 2015, for a fee of around £10 million. A few Chelsea supporters resented his move and threatened him with death.

At Arsenal, Čech was given the captain’s armband for their opening day 4-3 loss to Liverpool in 2016. Later that year, he was featured in Arsenal’s 3-0 rout of his former club, Chelsea.

Čech‘s final match was Arsenal’s 4-1 defeat to Chelsea in the 2019 UEFA Europa League final. Several media outlets described him as Arsenal’s Man of the Match in that game.

Internationally, Čech represented the Czech Republic national team. He made his senior debut in 2002 and was named the best goalkeeper at Euro 2004. He is the most capped player in Czech Republic history, having made 124 appearances before retiring from international football in 2016.

After retiring from football, Čech signed for ice hockey side Guildford Phoenix in 2019, making one appearance as a goaltender. He later re-signed with the team on loan in the 2023-24 season.
