Early Life And Education

Timothy Wonnacott was born on March 12, 1951, in Barnstaple, Devon, England, United Kingdom. Wonnacott is the son of Major Raymond Wonnacott, an auctioneer in South West England, and his wife, Pamela Rosalind Wonnacott. He had one older brother, Paul Wonnacott, who passed away in the late 1960s.

Wonnacott was educated at the independent West Buckland School in Devon. After qualifying as a chartered auctioneer and chartered surveyor, he took a postgraduate course at the Victoria and Albert Museum in fine and decorative arts. Wonnacott‘s ethnicity is white, and he practices Christianity.

Career

Tim Wonnacott‘s ambition from a young age was to follow in the footsteps of his father, Major Raymond Wonnacott, who was an auctioneer in South West England. Wonnacott joined the prestigious auction house Sotheby’s in 1978 and steadily rose, becoming a full Director in 1985.

He was then appointed the sole chairman of Sotheby’s South, overseeing operations at the saleroom in Billingshurst, Sussex, and the Olympia, London location. Wonnacott also ran Sotheby’s operations in North West England when he lived in Cheshire.

After 25 successful years at Sotheby’s, Wonnacott left the company in January 2003 to concentrate on his growing media activities. He started his own OK art agency and brokerage business, Tim Wonnacott & Associates, which provides independent advice to antique buyers and sellers.

Wonnacott continued to be active in the auction world. In October 2007, he took part in what was believed to be the world’s largest public art auction. Sixty-three fiberglass cows were sold outside Manchester Town Hall, with the proceeds going to a local charity.

Wonnacott‘s expertise and passion for antiques led him to become a fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. In July 2003, he replaced David Dickinson as the daytime host of the popular BBC One television program Bargain Hunt, a role he would hold for over 350 episodes due to his appeal to viewers.

Wonnacott has also appeared on numerous other TV shows, including BBC One’s Restoration, The Divine Michelangelo, Test the Nation, and Ready, Steady, Cook.

In 2014, Wonnacott took on a new challenge when he was announced as a contestant on the twelfth series of Strictly Come Dancing. He was partnered with Australian dancer Natalie Lowe, but the couple were eliminated in week 4 after dancing the paso doble.

Despite this setback, Wonnacott‘s TV career continued to flourish until it was reported in September 2015 that he was no longer hosting Bargain Hunt, allegedly due to a disagreement with the show’s producers.
