David Keith Lynch was born on January 20, 1946, in Missoula, Montana. He is the son of Donald Walton Lynch, a research scientist, and Edwina “Sunny” Lynch, an English language tutor. He has two siblings, John Lynch and Martha Lynch.

He attended the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C., and later the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. From 1965 to 1969, he studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where he began making short films.
