He attended David E. Rue Junior High School and A. J. Demarest High School in Hoboken, New Jersey. However, he left high school without graduating after only 47 days due to “general rowdiness.” Sinatra briefly enrolled at Drake Business School but departed after 11 months. Sinatra was of Italian descent and practiced Christianity as his religion.

Career

Frank Sinatra began singing professionally as a teenager, despite never learning to read music. He got his first big break in 1935 when his mother convinced a local singing group called the 3 Flashes to let him join.

Sinatra was greatly influenced by the easy-listening vocal style of Bing Crosby and found success as a solo artist after signing with Columbia Records in 1943, becoming a teen idol known as the “bobby soxers.”

In 1946, Sinatra released his debut album The Voice of Frank Sinatra. He then signed with Capitol Records and released several acclaimed albums with arrangements by Nelson Riddle, including the classics In the Wee Small Hours (1955) and Songs for Swingin’ Lovers! (1956). In 1960, Sinatra left Capitol to start his own label, Reprise Records, where he continued his string of successful releases.

Sinatra collaborated with renowned artists like Count Basie and Antonio Carlos Jobim over the years. Highlights include the albums Sinatra-Basie: An Historic Musical First (1962), It Might as Well Be Swing (1964), and Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim (1967). In 1965, he recorded the retrospective album September of My Years and starred in the Emmy-winning TV special Frank Sinatra: A Man and His Music.

Alongside his illustrious music career, Sinatra also forged a highly successful acting career. After winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for From Here to Eternity (1953), he starred in acclaimed films like The Man with the Golden Arm (1955) and The Manchurian Candidate (1962). He also appeared in popular musicals such as On the Town (1949) and Guys and Dolls (1955).

Toward the end of his performing career, Sinatra frequently played detective roles, including the title character in Tony Rome (1967). On television, The Frank Sinatra Show debuted on CBS in 1950, and he continued making TV appearances through the 1960s. He received numerous prestigious honors, including the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the Congressional Gold Medal.

Sinatra’s remarkable versatility and iconic status cemented his place as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. American music critic Robert Christgau famously described him as “the greatest singer of the 20th century,” a testament to Sinatra’s enduring legacy as a true musical and cinematic legend.
