Career

Stephen Sprouse’s journey in fashion began after studying at the Rhode Island School of Design. Initially, he pursued painting, but his focus shifted when he moved to New York City. There, he secured a position with renowned designer Halston, marking the start of his professional journey in the fashion industry.

While still a student, Sprouse received permission to work in New York, where he collaborated with fashion designer Leo Narducci. He had previously worked with Narducci during a summer in the city when he was 16.

Sprouse, along with Dennis Christopher and Bill Dugan, formed a trio of assistants known as the Halstonettes. They gained valuable knowledge about luxury and form from Halston. Sprouse also had the opportunity to interact with prominent figures in the social circles of the time.

After leaving Halston in 1975, Sprouse lived in a loft in the Bowery with singer Debbie Harry, who would frequently feed his cats. Blondie, the new band that Harry and her boyfriend, guitarist Chris Stein, started gaining recognition for at New York nightclubs CBGB and Max’s Kansas City, became an essential part of Sprouse’s creative circle.

Sprouse’s style of dressing up Harry in torn tights, T-shirts, and found items from the streets, turning her into a sort of “Bowery Bjornson,” foreshadowed his pioneering fusion of streetwear and high fashion.

Sprouse’s career took off in 1983 when he competed in a fashion show contest sponsored by Polaroid. His edgy designs, incorporating graffiti and vibrant colors, garnered significant attention, leading him to establish his own company, Stephen Sprouse, Inc., and launch his first commercial collections.

Sprouse’s innovative approach to fashion was marked by his collaborations with renowned musicians and artists, including Debbie Harry, Iggy Pop, Mick Jagger, Axl Rose, Trent Reznor, Courtney Love, David Bowie, and Duran Duran, for whom he designed costumes and album covers.

He was also inspired by the work of Andy Warhol and Keith Haring, incorporating their imagery into his designs. He had the unique privilege of using Warhol’s iconic imagery, a privilege bestowed upon no other designer.

In 2000, Sprouse collaborated with Marc Jacobs to create a groundbreaking collection for Louis Vuitton. The collection featured graffiti-inspired designs that redefined luxury fashion.

He continued to push the boundaries of fashion throughout the 1980s and 1990s, and in 2002, he designed an affordable collection for Target, making his designs accessible to a broader audience.
