Early Life And Education

Paul Leonard Newman was born on January 26, 1925, in Shaker Heights, Ohio, United States. He was the second son of Theresa Garth and Arthur Sigmund Newman, Sr., who ran a sporting goods store.

Newman had one sibling, an older brother named Arthur S. Newman Jr., who later became a producer and production manager in the film industry.

Newman graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in drama and economics from Kenyon College in 1949.

Before that, he briefly attended Ohio University but was expelled. After his military service during World War II, Newman studied at the Yale School of Drama for a year and later trained at the Actors Studio under Lee Strasberg, significantly shaping his acting career.

Newman had a mixed background. His father was Jewish, with Hungarian and Polish Jewish ancestry, while his mother was of Slovak descent and practiced Christian Science. Newman himself practiced Christianity as his religion.
