Early Life And Education
Farhan Akhtar was born on January 9, 1974 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. He is the son of renowned screenwriter and poet Javed Akhtar and writer and actress Honey Irani.
After his parents divorced when he was young, his father married actress Shabana Azmi in 1984. Farhan has one sibling, Zoya Akhtar, who is also a well-known filmmaker and screenwriter in Bollywood.
Akhtar studied at Maneckji Cooper School in Mumbai and then pursued a law degree at HR College in Mumbai. He is of Indian ethnicity and practices atheism as his religion.
Career
Farhan Akhtar‘s career began in 1991, when he was 17, and worked as an apprentice in film distribution and direction for Yash Chopra’s Lamhe.
He then moved to an advertisement production house called Script Shop, where he spent approximately three years. Akhtar also assisted Pankaj Parashar as a director on the film Himalay Putra in 1997 before launching himself into direction and writing.
Akhtar made his writing and directorial debut with the critically acclaimed coming-of-age comedy Dil Chahta Hai in 2001. The film was produced by Excel Entertainment, a production company he established along with Ritesh Sidhwani in 1999. It was shot over three months in Sydney, Goa, and Mumbai.
Akhtar’s directorial debut, Dil Chahta Hai, received critical acclaim for its realistic portrayal of modern Indian youth. In addition to his directorial work, Akhtar also wrote the English lyrics for the Hollywood film Bride and Prejudice in 2004, along with his sister, Zoya Akhtar, after his father recommended them.
In 2006, Akhtar directed, produced, and wrote the screenplay for the action thriller Don, a remake of the 1978 film of the same name. He then directed the war film Lakshya in 2004 and the Don sequel, Don 2, in 2011.
As an actor, Akhtar made his screen debut in the musical drama Rock On!! in 2008. For this film, he won a National Film Award for Best Hindi Film (as producer) and the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut.
He later starred in, wrote the dialogues for, and produced the buddy-road film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara in 2011, which won him Filmfare Awards for Best Film, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Dialogue. He then portrayed the legendary athlete Milkha Singh in the biopic Bhaag Milkha Bhaag in 2013, for which he won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor.
In addition to his work in films, Akhtar has also been involved in various other projects throughout his career. He appeared as a judge on Femina Miss India’s beauty pageant in 2002 and the dance-reality show Nach Baliye in 2005.
