Arshad Hussain Warsi was born on April 19, 1968, in Bombay (now Mumbai), Maharashtra, India. He is the son of Ahmed Ali Khan, a poet who also worked as a musician in Hindi films.
Ahmed Ali Khan adopted the surname “Warsi” after becoming a follower of the Sufi saint Waris Ali Shah. Arshad’s mother’s name is not widely known.
Arshad is the half-brother of singer Anwar Hussain and actress Asha Sachdev, from his father’s first marriage to actress Ranjana Sachdev. He attended Barnes School, a boarding school in Deolali, Nashik district, Maharashtra.
