Early Life
Agbani Darego was born to a family of ten in the ancient city of Lagos. She is the sixth child of eight children.
Her mother’s name is Inaewo Darego, an entrepreneur with a rice trading business and clothing boutique.
Unfortunately, she passed away when Agbani was only ten years old from complications caused by the dreaded breast cancer.

Agbani Darego revealed that her mother’s death had a devastating effect on her family and, in the long run, prepared her to face tough challenges in life.
She lived in Lagos for two years before her family relocated to Port-Harcourt in Rivers State, South-south Nigeria, in a small town called D-Line.

Agbani Darego did her primary school education in Bereton Montessori Nursery and Primary School located in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State.
At ten, she was transferred to a boarding school to keep her away from her sick mother, who suffered from complications of breast cancer.
She completed her secondary school education at the Federal Government Girls Secondary School located in Abuloma, Rivers State.
For her tertiary education, she attended the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where she studied computer science and mathematics courses.
In 2012, she graduated with a degree in Psychology from New York University.

Pageantry Career
Agbani Darego reached a high point in her career as a beauty queen when she won the crown for the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria, the year 2001.
And a few months later, she represented her beloved country Nigeria at the Miss Universe. Again, she made it to the top ten of the competition and became the first Nigerian to do so, in a competition where she finished seventh.
In the Swimsuit competition at Miss Universe, she was the only top ten contestants to wear a modest maillot instead of the standard revealing bikini everyone wore.
In the winter of November 2001, Agbani Darego created a record becoming the first indigenous African to win the Miss World title.
The victory was not hers alone but was celebrated throughout Africa, especially Nigeria’s country of origin. Throughout her tenure year, she also won the right to tour the world, scheduling appearances courtesy of the pageant, including the MFR.
Agbani Darego has appeared in the panel of judges in numerous pageant, fashion, and modeling competitions. She’s also judged in Miss England 2002, Mr. Scotland 2002, Elite Model Look Nigeria 2012, and 2014 including the Miss World 2014.
Modeling career
The pride of Nigeria, Agbani Darego started her modeling career as a teenager when without her father’s consent auditioned for the M-Net Face of Africa modeling competition, where she failed to make it to the final.
She didn’t let the loss weigh her down, and after a few years, she was contracted to feature in boutique chain collectibles.
After achieving an incredible feat at Miss Universe, she was invited by Naomi Campbell to participate in a charity fashion show termed Frock ‘n’ Roll in the city of Barcelona. Soon she secured her first foreign modeling deal with Donald Trump Model Management in America.
Becoming Miss World was a big deal. It enabled her secured another major contract with L’Orèal, the London and Paris branches of Next Model Management. She signed a three-year deal with the company becoming the second black model to achieve this feat after Venessa Williams.
