Maximilian Adelbert Baer Jr. was born on December 4, 1937 in Oakland, California, United States. He was the son of boxing champion Max Baer Sr. and Mary Ellen Sullivan. Baer Jr. grew up with two siblings, James Manny Baer and Maudie Marian Baer.

Baer attended Christian Brothers High School in Sacramento, where he excelled in multiple sports, notably winning the junior title at the Sacramento Open golf tournament twice.

He later earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Santa Clara University, with a minor in philosophy. Baer Jr. is of white ethnicity and he practices Christianity as his religion.

Career

Max Baer Jr. began his acting career in 1960 with Warner Bros., appearing in various television series such as Maverick and 77 Sunset Strip.

His breakthrough came in 1962 when he was cast as Jethro Bodine on the CBS sitcom The Beverly Hillbillies, where he portrayed the naive but lovable nephew of Jed Clampett. This role became iconic, lasting throughout the show’s nine-season run and establishing Baer as a household name.

After The Beverly Hillbillies ended in 1971, Baer faced typecasting challenges, leading him to shift his focus towards film production and direction. He wrote, produced, and starred in the successful film Macon County Line (1974), which became a significant box office hit, earning over $30 million on a modest budget.

This success was followed by other projects, including Ode to Billy Joe (1976), which he directed and produced, further showcasing his versatility behind the camera.

Despite his early success, Baer’s acting opportunities diminished after The Beverly Hillbillies, but he continued to work sporadically in television and film until his retirement. He remains best known for his role as Jethro Bodine and is recognized as the last surviving main cast member of the show following the passing of Donna Douglas in 2015.
