Career

Kubrat Pulev began his boxing career in February 2002, winning the Strandzha Cup in Bulgaria. His victory included a significant win against Cuban world champion Odlanier Solís. However, Pulev faced challenges early in his amateur career, losing a rematch to Solís at the Chemiepokal Cup semifinals the following month.

Despite this, Pulev showcased his skill in the super-heavyweight division, earning bronze at the 2005 World Championships and gold at the 2008 European Championships. His journey also included representing Bulgaria at the 2008 Olympics, although he fell short in his first-round match against Solís at the 2003 World Championships.

Throughout his amateur career, Pulev consistently demonstrated resilience. In 2005, he defeated Islam Timurziev at the Strandzha Cup but lost in the EU Championship final to Italian Roberto Cammarelle. Pulev redeemed himself in 2007 by winning the Chemiepokal tournament.

Although highly regarded at the 2007 World Amateur Boxing Championships, a tough draw led to an early defeat by Cammarelle, who later won the competition. Pulev’s amateur career concluded with another loss to Cammarelle at the 2009 World Amateur Boxing Championships, propelling him to transition into professional boxing at 28.

Pulev made his professional debut in September 2009, defeating Florian Benche via a second-round technical knockout in Germany. Within three months, he secured three additional wins, concluding his first professional year undefeated.

In 2012, Pulev earned his first title opportunity, defeating Alexander Dimitrenko to claim the vacant European Heavyweight Championship. Over the years, Pulev established himself as a formidable contender, facing high-profile opponents like Tony Thompson in 2013 and competing in an IBF title eliminator against Derek Chisora in 2016, where he regained the European heavyweight title.

One of Pulev’s notable achievements outside traditional boxing was his victory in Triad Combat. On November 27, 2021, he defeated former MMA champion Frank Mir via first-round TKO, securing the Triad Combat Heavyweight World Championship.

This showcased Pulev’s adaptability and skill across combat sports, further solidifying his reputation as a versatile and dominant fighter.

In December 2024, Pulev reached the pinnacle of his career by defeating Mahmoud Charr via unanimous decision to claim the WBA Regular Heavyweight Title in Sofia, Bulgaria. Pulev’s technical prowess and precision earned him a clear victory, adding another significant accolade to his impressive career.
