Career
Lepa Brena, originally the lead vocalist of the band Slatki Greh, began her career in the early 1980s. The band, initially known as Lira Show, gained popularity with a blend of traditional folk and modern pop music.
In 1981, they changed their name to Slatki Greh, and the following year, Brena and the band released their debut album Čačak, Čačak (1982), written mostly by Milutin Popović-Zahar. This album launched Brena’s career and solidified her place in the Yugoslav music scene.
In 1983, Brena parted ways with Milutin Popović-Zahar and Vladimir Cvetković, ending her collaboration with Slatki Greh. That year, Brena and the band participated in Jugovizija, the Yugoslav selection for the Eurovision Song Contest, with the song “Sitnije, Cile, sitnije.”
The song was released as an extended play, alongside another track. Her musical journey continued with the release of several successful albums, such as Bato, Bato (1984) and Hajde da se volimo (1987), making Brena one of the most popular singers in the Balkans.
In 1991, Brena and Slatki Greh released their second-to-last album together, Zaljubiška. After a two-year hiatus, she made a comeback in 1993 with her first solo album, Ja nemam drugi dom, and performed a famous “concert in the rain” in 1994, which attracted 35,000 attendees.
Following this, Brena released two more solo albums: Kazna Božija (1994) and Luda za tobom (1996), both of which were highly successful.
In the mid-1990s, Brena recorded several popular hits, including “Kazna Božija,” “Luda za tobom,” “Sve mi dobro ide osim ljubavi,” and “Izdajice.” In 2000, she and Slatki Greh recorded their final album together, Pomračenje sunca.
After an eight-year break from the music industry, Brena returned in 2008 with Uđi slobodno… and followed up with Začarani krug in 2011, both of which were major successes.
From 2012 onward, Brena began working on new music, releasing Izvorne i novokomponovane narodne pesme in December 2013. Shortly after, she premiered two songs: “Ljubav čuvam za kraj” and “Zaljubljeni veruju u sve.” In December 2017, she released two new songs, “Zar je važno da l’ se peva ili pjeva” and “Boliš i ne prolaziš,” as part of her ongoing music projects.
In 2024, Brena announced her tour Imam pesmu da vam pevam in Bosnia and Herzegovina. She also made history by becoming the first musician to appear on the cover of Vogue Adria in November 2024.
Apart from her musical success, Brena ventured into acting, starring in popular Yugoslav films like Hajde Da Se Volimo, which further boosted her popularity.
