Historically, the term “Mafia” primarily referred to the Sicilian Mafia, known as “Cosa Nostra,” which has been a significant force since the 19th century. The Mafia in Italy has evolved, with different regional groups like the ‘Ndrangheta (from Calabria), the Camorra (from Naples), and the Sacra Corona Unita (from Apulia) gaining prominence.

Currently, the ‘Ndrangheta is widely considered not only one of the most powerful but also the richest mafia organization in the world.
