Outrage as Police Act Against Officer, Ignore Billionaire’s Sons in Naira Abuse
January 11, 2025The Nigerian Police Force has taken action against only one party involved in a widely circulated video depicting naira abuse. The footage, which went viral on social media, showed Wahab Okoya and Raheem Okoya, sons of Lagos billionaire industrialist Chief Razaq Okoya, engaging in actions deemed to violate Central Bank of Nigeria regulations on the misuse of the national currency.
The video prominently featured a police officer, seemingly complicit or present during the currency abuse. Following its spread, the Nigerian Police Force, through its Public Relations Officer ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the officer’s identification and detention for disciplinary measures. However, no mention of or action has been taken against Chief Okoya‘s sons, who were directly involved in the incident.
This selective enforcement has sparked outcry on social media, with Nigerians questioning disparities in law enforcement based on socio-economic status. Critics argue this underscores broader issues of privilege and impunity, where the wealthy operate seemingly above the law. Social media users demand equal treatment, highlighting disparities in justice administration.
The police’s decision to discipline only the officer has been criticized. Some suggest the officer may have been following orders or unable to intervene due to power dynamics. Concerns arise over officers’ involvement in private capacities for high-profile individuals, leaving them to bear legal consequences alone.
The sons’ public apology, claiming ignorance of consequences, has not placated the public demand for justice and accountability. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), historically involved in naira abuse cases, has not commented on pursuing legal action against the Okoya sons. This silence adds to debates on legal accountability and perceived elite protection.
