She is the daughter of Elinor Tullie (née Hene), a homemaker and part-time writer, and John Martin Couric Jr., a public relations executive and news editor for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the United Press in Washington, D.C.

Couric grew up in a family with three siblings: Emily Couric, Clara Couric Bachelor, and John M. Couric Jr. Ginia. She earned a bachelor’s degree in American Studies in 1979.
