He is the eldest of two sons, born to Jackson Cephus Gibbs (1916–1989) and Winnie Era Blalock (1915–2000).

He has a brother named Jim Gibbs. Gibbs graduated from Santa Fe High School in 1959, where he played quarterback.

After high school, Gibbs attended Cerritos College before transferring to San Diego State University. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1964 and a master’s degree in 1966 from the University.

Career

Joe Gibbs began his coaching career in 1964 at San Diego State University as an offensive line coach under Don Coryell.

Over the next decade, he advanced through several college programs, including Florida State, USC, and Arkansas. His reputation for motivational skills and strong work ethic helped him gain recognition.

In 1973, Gibbs entered the NFL as the offensive backfield coach for the St. Louis Cardinals, followed by a stint as offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1978 and then with the San Diego Chargers in 1979.

Gibbs helped develop the “Air Coryell” offence during his time with the Chargers. This sophisticated passing attack set multiple offensive records, averaging over 400 yards per game during the 1980 season.

He also gained a reputation for advocating for Black quarterbacks, notably recommending Doug Williams as the best professional prospect in the 1978 NFL Draft, a controversial move at the time.

His success as an offensive mind eventually earned him the head coaching job with the Washington Redskins in 1981.
