She immediately became a key player for the team, scoring two goals in her rookie season and earning the NWSL Rookie of the Year award.

Her strong defensive performances also earned her recognition as a finalist for the NWSL Defender of the Year.

In 2015, Ertz’s season was cut short by her commitments to the United States women’s national team at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

She returned to the Red Stars later that season and played an essential role in their playoff run, though FC Kansas City eliminated them in the semi-finals.

Her excellent performances made her the U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year in 2017. By 2020, Ertz reached the milestone of 100 caps with the national team during a 2–0 win over England at the SheBelieves Cup.

In addition to her on-field achievements, she was featured in EA Sports’ FIFA video game series, marking a significant moment in including female players in the franchise.

In 2021, Ertz’s rights were traded to Angel City FC, and she returned to the NWSL in 2023 after a break from competitive soccer.
