Timileyin Ajayi, a 32-year-old gospel singer accused of the brutal murder of 24-year-old National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member Salome Adaidu, has pleaded not guilty in court. The arraignment took place at the High Court of Justice in Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa State, where Ajayi was charged with one count of culpable homicide, an offense punishable by death under Section 221 of the Penal Code of Northern Nigeria.

Ajayi was arrested on January 12, 2025, after allegedly killing and dismembering Adaidu during her visit to his residence in the Papalana area of New Karshi in Karu Local Government Area. The police had previously paraded Ajayi alongside the knives and machetes they claim were used in the crime. Despite a previous confession on national television where he reportedly explained his reasons for the murder, Ajayi entered a not guilty plea when formally charged in court.

The case has stirred significant public outcry due to the gruesome nature of the crime. Adaidu was undergoing her mandatory NYSC program at Nicon Insurance in Abuja before her untimely death. The incident has been widely covered by local media, with many expressing shock and demanding justice for the young woman.

Justice Simon Aboki is presiding over the case, which has been adjourned until March 17 and 20, 2025, for trial. The prosecution, led by Stanley Nwaforagwu from the Nasarawa State Police Command, stated that they would continue to pursue the case until justice is served.

Salome Adaidu‘s family and civil society groups, like the Justice Reform and Development Initiative, have been vocal, pushing for a thorough investigation and a fair trial. The group has even petitioned the Inspector General of Police with demands for a transparent legal process, support for the deceased’s family, and protection during the trial.
