Peter Obi, the Labour Party‘s 2023 presidential candidate, has rejected involvement in any political coalition focused solely on gaining power ahead of the 2027 elections. Speaking at the Abuja conference titled “Strengthening Nigeria’s Democracy: Pathways to Good Governance and Political Integrity,” Obi stressed his priority is the welfare of Nigerians, not political maneuvering.

Addressing speculations about opposition alliances, Obi stated, “I’m not interested in any coalition for taking power. It’s about securing Nigerians, ensuring our children are in school, and addressing the common person’s needs.” His remarks highlighted a commitment to substantive governance over political gamesmanship.

The conference, organized by groups including the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy & Development (Centre LSD) and the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), tackled governance and integrity issues. Obi also criticized the monetization of politics, warning it fuels corruption by enabling candidates to misuse public funds for political ambitions.

Obi‘s stance has resonated with many supporters on social media, praising his focus on governance. However, the discussion has also raised debates about the role of coalitions in addressing Nigeria’s complex challenges. While critics advocate for unity among opposition parties, Obi’s approach calls for principled politics over power-driven alliances.
