Pope Francis was unable to preside over the traditional Ash Wednesday Mass this year due to ongoing health concerns, the Vatican announced today. The 88-year-old pontiff, who has faced recurring health issues in recent years, was advised by medical staff to rest, raising concerns among the faithful as the Lenten season begins.

Ash Wednesday marks the start of the 40-day period of penance leading to Easter and is a significant event in the Catholic calendar. This year, however, the ceremony at the Basilica of Santa Sabina on Rome’s Aventine Hill proceeded without Pope Francis. The Vatican press office explained the Pope’s absence in a statement: “Due to a mild flu-like condition, and as a precautionary measure given his age, Pope Francis has been advised to limit his public engagements for the time being.” The statement reassured that he remains in good spirits and continues to fulfill his duties from his residence at the Domus Sanctae Marthae, albeit with a reduced schedule.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Pope Francis has encountered various health challenges throughout his papacy, including respiratory issues and a history of sciatica that has occasionally affected his mobility. In recent months, he has appeared increasingly frail, often using a wheelchair or cane during public appearances.
