Geetu‘s entry into the film industry began as a child actress. At the age of five, she starred in “Onnu Muthal Poojyam Vare” (1986), portraying a fatherless child who forms a bond with an anonymous telephone caller.
Her performance garnered attention, leading to roles in various Malayalam and Tamil films, including “En Bommukutty Ammavukku,” the Tamil remake of “Ente Mamattikkuttiyammakku.”
As an adult, Geetu appeared in films such as “Life is Beautiful,” “Thenkasi Pattanam,” and “Nammal Thammil.” Her portrayal of Rose in “Akale” (2004), directed by Shyamaprasad, earned her the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actress and the Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Malayalam.
Transitioning to direction, Geetu established her production house, Unplugged, in 2009. Her directorial debut, the short film “Kelkkunnundo” (“Are You Listening”), premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and won several international awards, including the National Film Award in India.
In 2014, she directed her first feature film, “Liar’s Dice,” which received the Hubert Bals Fund for script and project development. The film premiered in competition at the Sundance Film Festival and won two National Film Awards in India. It was also India’s official entry for the Best Foreign Film category at the 87th Academy Awards.
Her second feature, “Moothon” (“The Elder One”), was mentored by the Sundance Film Lab and received the Global Filmmaker Award at Sundance in 2016. “Moothon” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2019 and served as the opening film at the Mumbai Film Festival (MAMI) the same year.
