She is the daughter of Judith Ann (née Schieber), a professor specializing in reading comprehension, and Edwin Matthew Flynn, a film professor at Metropolitan Community College–Penn Valley. Flynn has an older brother, Travis, works as a railroad machinist.

She attended Bishop Miege High School and graduated in 1989. Flynn then pursued higher education at the University of Kansas, earning undergraduate degrees in English and journalism in 1994.
