Neena Gupta was born on June 4, 1959, in Calcutta (now Kolkata), West Bengal, India. She is the daughter of R.N. Gupta and Shakuntala Gupta and has a brother named Pankaj Gupta.

She completed her schooling at The Lawrence School, Sanawar, in Himachal Pradesh, before pursuing her undergraduate studies at Janki Devi Memorial College in Delhi. She further earned a Master’s degree and an M.Phil in Sanskrit.
