Presley Chweneyagae (born 19 October 1984) is a contemporary and prolific South African actor.

He has succeeded in making an excellent name for the South African movie industry and Africa at large.

Presley Chweneyagae hails from the Tswana tribe of South Africa; he starred in Tsotsi, which won an Oscar in the Foreign Film category at the 78th Oscars.

His mother, Agnes Keagile, decided to name Presley Chweneyagae after Elvis Presley because he was her favorite musical artist.

He made his first debut in a movie called Tsotsi; the movie catapulted him to stardom.

His most recent role was in the South African telenovela titled ‘The River’, where he played the role of “Cobra.”

Early Life

Presley Chweneyagae started showing interest in acting at a young age.

He was born on 19th October 1984 in the northwestern Mafikeng of South Africa.

He was born and raised during the time South Africa was apartheid. He is 40 years old.

Presley Chweneyagae grew up at a time when the country was a pariah due to stringent laws.
These laws isolated the majority black population from governing the white minority by denying the black population virtually any political rights.

Growing up for Presley Chweneyagae was quite challenging because blacks in South Africa were restricted to homelands or townships near big cities, where they lived in horrible, near-medieval circumstances and were required to carry a pass, or identity card, with them at all times and present it on demand.

South African legislation during the apartheid era also permitted indefinite incarceration without accusation or trial. However, the apartheid regime was eventually dismantled when Presley Chweneyagae was 10 years old and South Africa’s first free elections were held.

Career

Presley Chweneyagae began exploring his acting potentials by performing in plays and neighborhood theater productions. Although he has appeared in numerous shows for the Mmabana Arts Foundation, formerly known as northwest Arts, he also took the role of ‘Puck’ in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Cards at the Grahamstown arts festival.

In the year 2000, Presley Chweneyagae made his first television acting debut in Orlando for the SABC TV show. In the year 2006, He made a debut for the mini-series titled When We Were Black. He played the role of a poet; In the fifth season of 90 Plein Street, he played Andile Grootboom. He also appears as Detective Moloko in the first season of Thula’s Vine.

Presley Chweneyagae became a global figure after Tsotsi, the movie he starred in, won an Oscar award in 2006.

Education

Presley Chweneyagae went to a drama school owned by Mpumelelo Paul Grootboom, a stage director and playwriter. As a teenager, he was doing theater roles before getting a lead role in the Tsotsi movie in 2005.

Personal Life

Presley Chweneyagae got married to a woman that hails from Swaziland, Pauline Chweneyagae.

They have two boys together. Two of the boys are called Preston Siya Chweneyagae and Siya Chweneyagae.
