Google AdSense Introduces Revenue-Share Changes
November 4, 2023Google, a key and giant player in the digital advertising industry, has recently unveiled significant modifications to its AdSense platform, impacting publishers and advertisers alike. With a longstanding history of two decades, Google’s AdSense has been pivotal in helping publishers monetize their online content. The latest changes involve adjustments to the platform’s revenue-share structure and payment methods.
A pivotal shift involves transforming the revenue-share structure, which was previously straightforward, with a 68% share for publishers. Under the new structure, the revenue share will undergo a division into separate rates for the buy-side and sell-side. When advertisers choose to procure display ads on AdSense via Google Ads, Google will retain an average of 15% of the advertiser spend, while publishers will receive a substantial 80% of the remaining revenue. This modification ensures publishers benefit from a larger portion of the revenue generated through ads displayed using Google Ads.
In cases where advertisers opt to utilize third-party platforms to purchase display ads on AdSense, publishers will retain 80% of the revenue, following the deduction of the third-party platform’s fees. Notably, Google will not exercise control or have visibility into the fees imposed by these third-party platforms.
These changes are primarily geared towards augmenting transparency and consistency for publishers, thereby making it easier for them to comprehend and compare the associated fees of various monetization methods. Despite these substantial alterations, Google expects that publishers will not experience a significant impact on their earnings. Ultimately, the adjustments aim to provide publishers with greater clarity regarding the media-buying process, all while maintaining a competitive and equitable environment for publishers within the ever-evolving landscape of the advertising industry.
