Early Life

Kashmala Tariq was born in Lahore, Pakistan, on January 24, 1972. She obtained her LLB from Punjab University in 1996 after graduating from Kinnaird College in Lahore. She received her LLM from the London School of Economics in 1999, a year in which she also served as the head of Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaaf’s UK operations. She has also asserted that she was President of the LSE Student Union between 1992 and 1998. However, there is some skepticism around this assertion, given that the LSE Student Union does not have a sabbatical President position.

Career

In the 2002 Pakistani general election, Tariq was elected to the National Assembly of Pakistan as a candidate of the Pakistan Muslim League on a seat allocated for women from Punjab. She was one of the most outspoken female legislators in the National Assembly. She was chosen Chairperson of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians Committee in 2007. In the 2008 Pakistani general election, she was re-elected to the National Assembly as a PML-Q candidate running on a Punjabi seat designated for women. For a four-year term, Tariq was chosen in February 2018 to serve as the Federal Ombudsperson for Protection Against Harassment of Women in the Workplace. Her employees held journalists from Waqt News against their will and beat them in March 2018. She told her employees to seize the journalists’ equipment and destroy the recorded dialogue after accusing them of recording an off-the-record talk.

Tariq works as a lawyer full-time. In 2020, she wed Waqas Khan.
