Early Life
On June 4, 1959, he was born into the Kalama-Owinari’s A.J.M. Diri family from the Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
Diri attended Okoro Basic School Sampou before transferring to Rev. Proctor Memorial Primary School Kaima, graduating with honors in 1977.
After graduating from Modi’s Government Secondary School, he earned a West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASCE) credential.
Diri received his Nigerian Certificate in Education (N.C.E.) in 1985 after graduating from the College of Education in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
He then earned a Bachelor of Education in Political Science from the University of Port-Harcourt in Rivers State in 1990.
Career
Senator Douye worked as a teacher in various government schools in rural Rivers State before entering politics.
He serves as the Ijaw National Congress (I.N.C.), the largest organization in the Ijaw Nation, and the First National Organizing Secretary.
He was appointed executive secretary of the Centre for Youth Development during the tenure of Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, the first executive governor of Bayelsa State.
During Goodluck Jonathan‘s presidency, he was named Bayelsa State’s Commissioner for Youth and Sports.
Diri was a University of Maiduguri’s governing council member from 2000 until 2012.
In 2012, he also served as the head of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Disciplinary Council in Bayelsa State.
In August 2012, he was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff at Government House, and a year later, he was elevated to Principal Executive Secretary, a position he maintained until 2014 when he resigned to run for the House of Representatives seat for the Kolokuma, Opokuma, and Yenagoa Federal Constituency.
He was elected in 2015. Among his legislative priorities are environmental and communication issues.
In Nigeria’s 9th National Assembly, he represented the Bayelsa Central senatorial district of Bayelsa state.
He won the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primary election in Bayelsa State on September 4, 2019, which was organized by the Governor Darius Ishaku-led PDP Bayelsa State Governorship Primary Committee at the Dr Gabriel Okara Cultural Centre in Yenagoa.
He was the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) nominee for governor of Bayelsa in 2019.
The 2019 Bayelsa State gubernatorial elections were declared invalid by the Supreme Court of Nigeria because David Lyon, the genuine victor’s running partner, had presented a forged certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission on February 13, 2020. The court issued Diri a certificate of return naming him as the new governor.
On February 14, 2020, he took the oath of office as governor of Bayelsa State.
