Her academic prowess and dedication paved the way for her to qualify as a barrister, specializing in constitutional and administrative law. She also holds a Master of Laws degree from the Université de Paris (Pantheon-Sorbonne), further enhancing her expertise in legal matters.
Personal Life
Suella married Rael Braverman, a Mercedes-Benz Group manager, whom she called a “proud member of the Jewish community.” The wedding took place at the House of Commons in February 2018. Rael Braverman, who immigrated to the UK from South Africa as a teenager, had previously resided in Israel.
Suella disclosed to The Jewish Chronicle that she has “close family members serving in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).” They have two children: a son named George, born in 2019, and a daughter named Gabriella, born in 2021. She resides in Locks Heath, Hampshire.
Braverman is affiliated with the Triratna Buddhist Community, previously known as the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order, but is not part of the Triratna Buddhist Order. She took her oath of allegiance as an MP on the Buddhist Dhammapada.
Career
Braverman was admitted to the bar at Middle Temple in 2005, marking her formal entry into the legal profession. She underwent pupillage at 2–3 Gray’s Inn Square (now Cornerstone Barristers). Still, she opted not to continue there, instead commencing her practice at the London branch of a significant Birmingham set, No5 Chambers.
Her legal work primarily revolved around litigation, including handling fundamental aspects of judicial review cases concerning immigration and planning law for government clients.
Additionally, she successfully passed the New York bar examination in 2006, granting her the license to practice law in the state until 2021, when her license was suspended due to failure to renew it.
Notably, in 2010, she was appointed to the entry-level position of the Attorney General’s C panel of counsel, where she handled basic government cases. In 2010, Braverman co-founded the Africa Justice Foundation alongside fellow barristers Cherie Booth and Philip Riches.
Turning to her political career, Braverman had her foot in the door of Conservative politics early on. Her name was already on the Conservative parliamentary candidate roster during the 2003 Brent East by-election.
Although she initially contemplated vying for the nomination, she stepped aside as her mother, Uma Fernandes, a Conservative councilor, was chosen. Braverman actively supported her mother’s campaign, even featuring in an article in The Guardian newspaper under the pseudonym Fernandes, titled “The road to No 10”.
In the 2005 general election, Braverman contested Leicester East, securing the second position behind Labour’s Keith Vaz. Despite this setback, she persisted, seeking selection as the Conservative candidate in Bexhill and Battle, albeit unsuccessfully.
Eventually, she clinched the nomination for the Conservative candidate in Fareham, Hampshire. Additionally, she bid for a seat on the London Assembly during the 2012 Assembly elections. Still, she fell short, being ranked fourth on the Conservative London-wide list.
Braverman’s political journey took a significant turn when she was elected to the House of Commons as the MP for Fareham in the 2015 general election, winning with a substantial majority.
Since then, she has been actively engaged in parliamentary affairs, mainly focusing on education, home affairs, and justice matters. Her contributions have been featured in various publications, including The Daily Telegraph, Bright Blue, i News, HuffPost, Brexit Central, and ConservativeHome.
As an MP, Braverman has spearheaded initiatives such as opening a Westminster Hall debate on the failings of Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust and chairing meetings to investigate instances of poor care quality and patient deaths.
She has also been an outspoken advocate for Brexit, chairing the European Research Group until her ministerial appointment. Despite facing criticism for her use of the term “cultural Marxism,” Braverman has maintained her stance and denied any antisemitic connotations.
Braverman’s electoral success continued in the 2019 general election, further solidifying her position in Parliament.
However, the 2023 Periodic Review of Westminster constituencies merged her Fareham constituency with Meon Valley, forming “Fareham and Waterlooville.” Braverman secured her position in this new constituency after a re-selection vote in April 2023.
