Early Life and Education

Paul Gascoigne, now at the age of 57, was born on May 27, 1967, in Gateshead, England. He grew up in a working-class family, with his father, John Gascoigne, working as a hod carrier, and his mother, Carol Gascoigne, as a cleaner. Gascoigne, along with his siblings Carl, Lindsay, and Anna-Marie, experienced a modest upbringing in the town of Gateshead.

He was named Paul John Gascoigne in honor of Paul McCartney and John Lennon of the Beatles and has Irish ancestry through his grandparents.

He attended Breckenbeds Junior High School and then the Heathfield Senior High School in the Low Fell area of Gateshead. Gascoigne was noticed by football scouts while playing for Gateshead Boys but failed to impress during a trial at Ipswich Town.

Although successful on the football field, Gascoigne’s childhood was marked by instability and tragedy. He witnessed the death of a friend’s younger brother in a traffic collision at the age of ten, and around the same time, his father began experiencing seizures.

Personal Life

Gascoigne tied the knot with his longtime partner Sheryl Failes in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, in July 1996, after being in a relationship for about six years.

He later confessed to being violent towards Sheryl during their marriage. They officially ended their marriage in early 1999. In 2009, Sheryl released a revealing book titled Stronger: My Life Surviving Gazza.

Gascoigne fathered a son, Regan, with Sheryl and also adopted Sheryl’s two children from her previous marriage, Mason and Bianca. Bianca is a well-known model and television personality, and she appeared on the reality TV show Love Island.

During the 1990s, Gascoigne, Danny Baker, and Chris Evans had a widely publicized friendship, and Gascoigne frequently made appearances on their radio and television shows on Talksport and TFI Friday.

In October 2004, Gascoigne announced his desire to be referred to as G8, a combination of the first letter of his surname and the number he wore on his football shirt, because it symbolized “greatness.”

Career

Gascoigne led Newcastle United’s youth team to victory in the FA Youth Cup during the 1984–85 season, scoring twice in the final against Watford. The first leg ended in a 0–0 draw, with teammate Joe Allon noting Newcastle’s poor performance.

Gascoigne played a key role in their victory in the second leg, catching the attention of manager Jack Charlton. Despite Charlton’s promise of a first-team appearance, Gascoigne did not get picked for the next game against Norwich City.

In 1985, Gascoigne made his first-team debut, replacing George Reilly in a win over Queens Park Rangers. Manager Charlton considered his appearances to be brief, but Gascoigne signed a contract with Newcastle and was given a generous payment arrangement by Charlton.

Under manager Willie McFaul in the 1985–86 season, Gascoigne replaced Chris Waddle and scored his first goal against Oxford United. He continued to perform well in the following season, scoring 5 goals in 24 league games as Newcastle finished 17th in the First Division.
