Early Life & Education

Ebrahim Raisi is a prominent figure in Iranian politics, born on 14 December 1960 in Mashhad, Iran. His parents, Seyedeh Esmat Khodadad Hosseini and Seyed Haji Rais Al-Sadati, played a significant role in his upbringing.

However, limited information is available about his siblings. Ebrahim Raisi received his primary education at Javadiyeh School and went on to study at the Hawza (Islamic seminary).

As a young boy, Ebrahim Raisi showed a keen interest in religious studies, and after completing his elementary education, he delved into the world of seminary education in Mashhad. However, he only completed up to the sixth grade in this field, which might raise a few eyebrows considering his later prominence in Iran’s religious and political circles.

Career

Ebrahim Raisi‘s career was as vibrant and complex as a Persian rug. Born in 1959 in the bustling city of Mashhad, Raisi began his journey as a cleric, eventually climbing to the highest echelons of power in Iran.

Raisi‘s path in the judiciary was marked by significant events. Starting as a prosecutor in Karaj, he quickly ascended to the role of Prosecutor of Tehran, a position that would significantly shape his legacy. His involvement in the 1988 mass execution of political prisoners earned him the controversial nickname “Ayatollah of Massacre” among his critics, a dark chapter that shadowed his career.

Despite the controversy, Ebrahim Raisi‘s career in the judiciary flourished. He rose through the ranks to become the head of the judiciary in 2019, focusing on anti-corruption measures and strict legal principles.

In 2021, Raisi was elected as Iran’s eighth president, serving until his untimely death in a helicopter crash in 2024. His presidency was marked by significant events, including the U.S. withdrawal from the JCPOA, the reimposition of U.S. sanctions on Iran, and the outbreak of conflict in Gaza between Israel and the Iran-backed Hamas.

Ebrahim Raisi‘s career was also marked by his deep-rooted conservative and religious beliefs. His clerical studies began young, although his exact qualifications have been debated. He held various positions within Iran’s judiciary, including Deputy Chief Justice, Attorney General, and Chief Justice. His tenure included controversial roles, such as being part of the “death committee” during the 1988 executions, leading to accusations of crimes against humanity.

Raisi‘s political career saw him in several high-profile roles. He was the Custodian and Chairman of Astan Quds Razavi from 2016 to 2019, and he was elected to the Assembly of Experts from South Khorasan Province in 2006. His close ties to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei were evident throughout his career.

Despite losing to Hassan Rouhani in the 2017 presidential race, Ebrahim Raisi secured a contentious victory in the 2021 election amid allegations of fraud and low voter turnout. His presidency sparked both hope and concern, with promises to address domestic issues like unemployment and poverty but also fears of deteriorating international relations, particularly with the U.S.

Cause Of Death

Ebrahim Raisi, the President of Iran, tragically perished in a helicopter crash on May 19, 2024. Despite the high status of his office, it seems even presidents aren’t immune to the dangers of aviation accidents.

The crash took place in the mountainous and forested area of Varzeghan, near the village of Uzi in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province. The helicopter, a Huey Bell, crashed while Ebrahim Raisi was en route to inaugurate a dam on the Aras River. Unfortunately, what was meant to be a significant event turned into a tragic one.

Following the crash, the Iranian constitution requires that the three heads of the branches of government organize an election and select a new leader within 50 days of assuming the role of acting President. Thus, the political process continues, even in the wake of this unexpected loss.
