In 2000, she became the head coach at Baylor University, where she led the team to four Final Fours and three national championships (2005, 2009, and 2012). 

During her tenure at Baylor, Mulkey was named National Coach of the Year nine times and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2020.

In 2021, Mulkey became the head coach at LSU, leading the team to a national championship in 2023.
