Early Life and Education
Aaron Edward Eckhart was born on March 12, 1968, in Cupertino, California, United States. He is the son of Mary Martha Lawrence, a poet and children’s author, and James Conrad Eckhart, a computer executive. Eckhart is the youngest of three siblings, with two older brothers named James Lawrence Eckhart and Adam Eckhart.
Eckhart attended the American Community School, where he was first introduced to acting, starring in a school production as Charlie Brown. In 1985, he moved to Australia and settled in Sydney, attending the American International School of Sydney for his high school senior years.
In 1988, Eckhart returned to the United States and enrolled as a film major at Brigham Young University–Hawaii, later transferring to Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah. He graduated from BYU in 1994 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Eckhart also studied acting at the William Esper Studio.
He is of mixed ethnicity: his father, James Conrad Eckhart, has German (including German-Russian) ancestry, while his mother, Mary Martha Eckhart, has English, Scottish, German, and Scotch-Irish roots.

Aaron Eckhart began his acting career with school plays. After high school in Australia, he returned to the United States and enrolled at Brigham Young University. At BYU, he made his professional debut in the Mormon-themed film Godly Sorrow, marking the start of his collaboration with director Neil LaBute, who later cast him in several of his plays.
After graduating, Eckhart moved to New York City, where he supported himself through odd jobs, including bartending and construction work. His big break came in 1997 when LaBute cast him in the film adaptation of In the Company of Men. His portrayal of a frustrated white-collar worker deceiving a deaf office worker received critical acclaim.
Eckhart’s next major role came in 2000 as George, a biker, in Erin Brockovich, directed by Steven Soderbergh. He later co-starred with Renée Zellweger in Nurse Betty (2000) and played a young detective in Sean Penn’s The Pledge (2001).
In 2006, Eckhart received a Golden Globe nomination for his performance as Nick Naylor in Thank You for Smoking. In 2008, he played Harvey Dent/Two-Face in Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster The Dark Knight.
