Early Life And Education
Billy Bob Thornton was born in Hot Springs, Arkansas, on August 4, 1955. He is the son of Virginia Roberta (née Faulkner), a self-proclaimed psychic, and William Raymond “Billy Ray” Thornton, a high school history teacher and basketball coach.
Thornton has two brothers, John David Thornton, and Jimmy Don Thornton, though sadly his brother Jimmy Don passed away in 1988. Jimmy showed talent as a songwriter, with two songs being “Island Avenue” and “Emily.”
He attended Malvern High School, where he struggled academically due to undiagnosed dyslexia. Despite this, he was a talented baseball player in high school and even tried out for the Kansas City Royals, though he was released after an injury.
After graduating from Malvern High School in 1973, Thornton briefly worked laying asphalt for the Arkansas State Transportation Department. He then attended Henderson State University to pursue a degree in psychology but dropped out after just two semesters. Thornton is of English and Irish descent, though his religious beliefs are unknown.
Career
Billy Bob Thornton began his acting career in the early 1990s, with his first on-screen role in the 1987 thriller “Hunter’s Blood.” In this film, Thornton played a character named Billy Bob and served as a stand-in for the entire production, eventually appearing in two scenes.
Thornton’s breakout role came in 1992 when he played the villain in the film “One False Move,” which he also co-wrote. This performance marked the beginning of his rise to prominence, and he went on to appear in several other films throughout the 1990s, including “Indecent Proposal,” “On Deadly Ground,” “Bound by Honor,” and “Tombstone.”
In 1996, Thornton achieved critical acclaim for his work on the independent film “Sling Blade,” which he wrote, directed, and starred in. The film, an expansion of the short film “Some Folks Call It a Sling Blade,” introduced the story of a mentally disabled man imprisoned for a gruesome and seemingly inexplicable murder.
The press often described Thornton’s screen persona during this period as that of a “tattooed, hirsute man’s man.” This image was further reinforced when he appeared in Travis Tritt’s music video for the song “Modern Day Bonnie and Clyde” in 2000.
In the 1970s, Thornton was the drummer of a blues rock band named Tres Hombres, which guitarist Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top praised as “the best little cover band in Texas.” Thornton bore a tattoo with the band’s name, and the group released its only studio album, “Gunslinger,” in 1983.
Thornton has continued to explore his musical interests throughout his career, releasing several albums under his name, including “Private Radio” (2001), “The Edge of the World” (2003), “Hobo” (2005), and “Beautiful Door” (2007).
He has also collaborated with other artists, such as covering the Warren Zevon song “The Wind” on a tribute album and recording a cover of the Johnny Cash classic “Ring of Fire” with Earl Scruggs.
