Ellis attended Hofstra University, where he played college football and studied communications and performance.

After college, Ellis pursued a professional football career, playing as a wide receiver in the NFL. Devale Ellis is of African-American ethnicity and practices Christianity as his religion.
Career
Devale Ellis began his professional career as a football player, specifically as a wide receiver. In 2006, he went undrafted in the NFL draft but was given the opportunity to participate in a rookie mini-camp as a tryout player. His performance during the tryout was impressive enough for the Detroit Lions to sign him to their eight-man practice squad on September 3, 2006.
Despite this initial signing, Ellis‘ tenure with the Lions was short-lived. He did manage to play in the season opener against the Seattle Seahawks on September 9th, but he was waived from the active roster just two days later, on September 11th. Shortly after, he was re-signed to the practice squad. However, his time on the practice squad was not long either, as he was upgraded to the active roster on October 15th and made his first start against the Buffalo Bills.
Unfortunately, Ellis‘ time with the Lions came to an end on August 30, 2008, when he was waived during the final roster cuts. He spent the entire 2008 regular season out of football but was given another chance when the Cleveland Browns signed him to a future contract on December 31, 2008. This opportunity was short-lived, as he was waived by the Browns on July 26, 2009.
After his unsuccessful attempts to make it in the NFL, Ellis shifted his focus to the entertainment industry. In the 2010s, he began guest-starring on various television series, including Power, The Mysteries of Laura, Gotham, The Blacklist, and NCIS. In 2019, he landed a series regular role in the BET comedy-drama series Sistas, further establishing his acting career.
In more recent years, Ellis has continued to build his acting portfolio, with recurring roles in the BET series Bigger from 2019 to 2021 and a guest appearance on The Equalizer.
In 2022, he appeared in the Lifetime thriller film Single Black Female and played the male lead opposite Eva Marcille in the Oprah Winfrey Network comedy-drama television film A Christmas Fumble. Most recently, in 2023, he was cast opposite Christina Milian in the Netflix romantic comedy film Meet Me Next Christmas.
