Eugene Levy started his career in the 1972-1973 Toronto production of the musical Godspell, which opened at the Royal Alexandra Theatre. The local cast launched the careers of many actors, including Levy, Victor Garber, Andrea Martin, Gilda Radner, Dave Thomas, and Martin Short, as well as the show’s musical director, Paul Shaffer. After an enthusiastic response, the show moved to the Bayview Playhouse and ran for a then-record 488 performances.

Levy is an alumnus of the Second City, Toronto comedy troupe and the sketch comedy series Second City Television (SCTV). On SCTV, he often played unusual supporting characters with nerdy streaks, impersonating celebrities like Perry Como, Alex Trebek, and Howard Cosell.

Some of his original SCTV characters include the dimwitted news anchor Earl Camembert, and roles like comic Bobby Bittman, accordionist Stan Schmenge, and teen dance show host Rockin’ Mel Slirrup.

While he has only starred in two films, Armed and Dangerous (1986) and The Man (2005), Levy has featured prominently in many films, often as a co-writer and cast member of Christopher Guest‘s mockumentary features.
