Guillermo Héctor Francella was born on February 14, 1955, in Paso de los Toros, Tacuarembó, Uruguay. He is the son of Ricardo Héctor Francella, a bank employee, gym teacher, and weightlifting coach at Racing Club, and Adelina Redondo.

He is the second of two children, with an older brother named Ricardo Francella. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the Institute June 20 of San Isidro in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1972.
