Early Life And Education
Michael Jason Isbell, known as Joson Isbell, was born in Green Hill, Alabama, on February 1, 1979. When he was born, his parents were teenagers who later divorced.
The son of house painter Mike Isbell and interior designer Angela Hill Barnett, he was raised in an extended home with grandparents. Isbell grew up in North Alabama with his siblings, two of whom are significantly younger than him (Chantry Barnett and Emily Isbell).
The intriguing thing about Jason Isbell’s school background is that he put his music career before finishing his degree. On a creative writing academic scholarship, he studied English and creative writing at the University of Memphis.

Lacking a single credit, he left school to embark on a tour. Following conversations on his professional background with the University of Memphis, he received his bachelor’s degree in English in September 2023.
Career
Jason Isbell started his career by being a Truckers Driver (2001–2007), For six years while they toured in support of their album Southern Rock Opera. The band operates out of Athens, Georgia. Isbell was a key member of this Southern rock group.
He was a contributing songwriter and guitarist, with songs like “Decoration Day” turning into hits for the group—in 2001, when he was just 22 years old. During Isbell’s time with the band, he resided in Athens, Georgia, where the band is based.
Patterson Hood, the other co-founder, remembers that Dick Cooper, a mutual friend from Muscle Shoals, introduced him to Isbell. After Isbell hung out with the band at an acoustic house party after guitarist Rob Malone failed to show up, Hood offered him to join the Drive-By Truckers.
Jason Isbell started a Solo Career in (2007-Present): In order to focus on his solo career, Isbell departed Drive-By Truckers in 2007. Since forming The 400 Unit, his backup band, he has been putting out highly regarded albums. Through his solo work, he has established himself as a reflective singer-songwriter with an Americana sound that combines folk, rock, and country influences.
Something More Than Free, Isbell’s fifth solo album, was released on July 17, 2015, via Southeastern Records. The album was recorded at Nashville’s Sound Emporium studio with a full band, and Dave Cobb produced it once more.
Jason Isbell also started his acting career. In 2016, Isbell made his TV series debut as a guest star, lending his voice to preacher Kyle Nubbins in the animated sitcom Squidbillies. Other Americana performers have made cameo appearances on the show, including Elizabeth Cook, Todd Snider, and the Drive-By Truckers.
Isbell made a cameo appearance in the HBO movie Deadwood: The Movie in 2019 as a guitar-playing wedding guest. In a 2021 episode of Billions, a TV show that is also renowned for giving musicians cameo appearances, Isbell played himself while taking in an art exhibit.

Jason Isbell is a double-married man. In 2002, he got married for the first time to fellow musician Shonna Tucker. In 2007, they got divorced. Isbell wed singer-songwriter Amanda Shires in 2013, and the two have a long history of creative collaboration.
Together, they have a daughter named Mercy. Nevertheless, information that Isbell had filed for divorce from Shires in December 2023 surfaced in February 2024.
