Kunal Khemu, now 42 years old, was born on May 25, 1983, in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, into a Kashmiri Pandit family. His father, Ravi Kemmu, was a respected theater actor, and his mother, Jyoti Kemmu, was a homemaker. He has a younger sister named Karishma Kemmu.

Due to political unrest in Kashmir during his early years, his family moved to Mumbai, Maharashtra. Kunal completed his schooling at N. L. Dalmia High School in Mira Road and later graduated from Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics in Vile Parle.
