Early Life And Education

Paul Leonard Newman was born on January 26, 1925, in Shaker Heights, Ohio, United States. He was the second son of Theresa Garth and Arthur Sigmund Newman, Sr., who ran a sporting goods store.

Newman had one sibling, an older brother named Arthur S. Newman Jr., who later became a producer and production manager in the film industry.

Newman graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in drama and economics from Kenyon College in 1949.

Before that, he briefly attended Ohio University but was expelled. After his military service during World War II, Newman studied at the Yale School of Drama for a year and later trained at the Actors Studio under Lee Strasberg, significantly shaping his acting career.

Newman had a mixed background. His father was Jewish, with Hungarian and Polish Jewish ancestry, while his mother was of Slovak descent and practiced Christian Science. Newman himself practiced Christianity as his religion.

Paul Newman began his acting career on Broadway, debuting in the original 1953 production of William Inge’s play Picnic, co-starring with Kim Stanley.

During this production, Newman met his future wife, Joanne Woodward, an understudy in the play. Newman went on to appear in the original Broadway production of The Desperate Hours in 1955.

In 1959, Newman starred in the original Broadway production of Sweet Bird of Youth alongside Geraldine Page, and three years later, he reprised the role in the film version alongside Page. During this time, Newman also began appearing on television, with his first credited role coming in a 1952 episode of the anthology series Tales of Tomorrow.

Newman achieved international fame through his roles in classic films such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) with Robert Redford, The Sting (1973), and Cool Hand Luke (1967).

In 1987, he directed a screen adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie, which starred his wife Joanne Woodward, John Malkovich, and Karen Allen. The film was well-received, with Variety praising the “brilliant performances” and Newman’s direction.

In 2003, Newman appeared in a Broadway revival of Thornton Wilder’s Our Town, earning a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Play. This performance was also captured for television, with Newman receiving an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or TV Movie.

Outside of acting, Newman co-founded the successful food company Newman’s Own in 1982. The brand started with salad dressing and has since expanded to include various products. All profits are donated to charity.

However, their marriage ended in divorce in 1958 after Newman fell in love with his co-star, Joanne Woodward. On January 29, 1958, Paul Newman married Joanne Woodward. This second marriage lasted over 50 years until Newman died in 2008.

Newman had three more daughters with Joanne Woodward: Nell, Melissa, and Clea. Despite his first wife’s divorce, Newman’s relationship with Joanne Woodward was long-lasting and successful.

They remained married for over half a century, raising their three daughters together until Newman‘s passing in 2008. Tragically, Paul Newman passed away on September 26, 2008, at 83. He died from lung cancer.
