Early Life And Education
Polad Murtuza oghlu Mammadov was born on February 4, 1945, in Baku, Azerbaijan. He is the son of Murtuza Rza oglu Mammadov (1897–1961), a famous Azerbaijani opera singer known as Bülbül (“nightingale”), and Adelaida Mammadova (née Gasimova, 1922–2015), who directed the Bulbul Museum until her death. While it is possible that he has siblings, their names are not publicly known.
Bulbuloglu began his musical education by studying piano at a music school and later attended the Baku Academy of UK Music, where he specialized in composition under the guidance of Gara Garayev.
His education continued with a doctorate in the History of Art from the Azerbaijan National Academy of Culture. He also holds an honorary professorship at the Azerbaijan State University of Culture and Arts. He is of Azerbaijani ethnicity and practices Islam.
Career
Polad Bulbuloglu began his career at the age of 17, composing songs that were performed by professionals, including his friend Muslim Magomayev. His vocal talent was discovered during a trip to Moscow with Magomayev, where he recorded his own songs in Azerbaijani.
Bulbuloglu blended modern music with traditional Azerbaijani styles, creating a unique sound that became popular across the Soviet Union. He toured widely and performed internationally, gaining recognition for his contributions to music.
In 1982, Bulbuloglu was named a National Artist of the Azerbaijan SSR. He won first prize at the Soviet television program Song of the Year on four occasions. His songs were performed by notable artists such as Muslim Magomayev, Joseph Kobzon, and Lev Leshchenko.
Additionally, he became a member of the USSR Union of Composers and Cinematographers in 1969, composing music for over 20 films and taking on leading roles in several of them.
Bulbuloglu also played a significant role in the cultural landscape of Azerbaijan. He managed the Stage Ensemble of the Azerbaijan SSR from 1976 and the Azerbaijan National Philharmonic Orchestra from 1987.
In 1988, he was appointed as the Minister of Culture of the Azerbaijan SSR. Later, he entered politics, joining the National Assembly of Azerbaijan in 1995 and continuing his career in public service.
In 2006, Polad Bulbuloglu left his role as Minister of Culture and moved to Moscow, where he became the Azerbaijani Ambassador to the Russian Federation.
In 2017, he ran for the position of Director-General of UNESCO but withdrew after receiving only two votes in the first round of the election. Despite this setback, he continued to serve as Azerbaijan’s ambassador to Russia.
In August 2024, Bulbuloglu announced his decision to leave his post as Ambassador to Russia. He plans to run for a seat in the Azerbaijani parliament from Shusha, a city in the Nagorno-Karabakh region where he spent his childhood. His career continues to combine both his artistic and political pursuits.
