Richard Schiff was born on May 27, 1955, in Bethesda, Maryland, to Edward, a real estate lawyer, and Charlotte, a cable TV and publishing executive. He has two brothers, Paul and David, who are both in the entertainment industry.

His parents divorced when he was 12, and his mother later married Clarence B. Jones, Martin Luther King Jr.‘s lawyer. Schiff grew up in a Jewish family and attended North Bethesda Junior High School and Charles W. Woodward High School.
