Early Life And Education

Coltrane began his education at Belmont House School in Newton Mearns before moving on to Glenalmond College, an independent school in Perthshire. Despite participating in activities such as rugby and art, he described his time at Glenalmond as deeply unhappy.

He later pursued painting at the Glasgow School of Art and attended Moray House College of Education in Edinburgh. Of Scottish heritage, Coltrane’s religious beliefs remain private.

Career

Robbie Coltrane began his career in the early 1980s, appearing in the sketch series Alfresco alongside Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry, and Emma Thompson.

His first significant recognition came in 1987 when he starred in the BBC miniseries Tutti Frutti with Thompson, earning his first British Academy Television Award nomination for Best Actor. Coltrane’s national prominence grew with his portrayal of criminal psychologist Dr. Eddie “Fitz” Fitzgerald in the ITV series Cracker.

His performance in the role earned him the British Academy Television Award for Best Actor for three consecutive years from 1994 to 1996. Coltrane was also voted No. 11 in ITV’s 50 Greatest Stars poll in 2006, further cementing his place in television history.

In addition to his television work, Coltrane found success in film, appearing in Mona Lisa and Nuns on the Run and playing Valentin Dmitrovich Zukovsky in the James Bond films GoldenEye and The World Is Not Enough. His other notable film roles included Henry V, Let It Ride, Ocean’s Twelve, The Brothers Bloom, Great Expectations, and Effie Gray.

Coltrane also lent his voice to animated films, including The Tale of Despereaux (2008) and Pixar’s Brave (2012), as well as the title roles in Gooby and The Gruffalo (2009). His ability to transition between live-action and voice work showcased his versatile acting talent.

In 2016, Coltrane starred in the critically acclaimed four-part Channel 4 drama National Treasure, portraying a former comedian accused of historic sexual offenses. His performance earned him a nomination for Best Actor at the 2017 British Academy Television Awards and a win at the Royal Television Society Programme Awards.

His portrayal was praised for its depth and complexity. Maureen Ryan of Variety noted his “masterful job of depicting every nuance of the character,” blending humor with a striking lack of self-awareness.
